Podcast: Avengers Forever Part 1 – Issues 1-6

Avengers Forever Part 1

Before we undertook this in-depth look at Busiek and Pacheco’s Avengers Forever we were bright-eyed young podcasters, optimistic about a future filled with awesome stories like this one, which we’d been led to believe was one of the great standalone Marvel tales.

By the end of this podcast we are somewhat different…men who have stared too long into the abyss perhaps.

And we’re only halfway there…

Simon’s Birthday Swag Bag! (note: does not include bag)

June 19, 2014

So, today was my birthday, I’ve turned the tender age of 27 and thought I’d show off my haul for the day… Now, admittedly, the PS4 and games are more of a present to myself but hey ho, got to treat yourself on your birthday too!

Birthday Swag!

Game of Thrones on Blu-RayThose of you who have been listening to our Game of Thrones-cast know that I regularly dazzle Jon with my significantly large gaps in knowledge about storylines, characters and places. To be clear, I LOVE Game of Thrones, probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, but it was also something I’ve never gone back and re-watched, always waiting until I had the time buy the blu-ray and watch on a player that didn’t sound like a jet engine (like my PS3 does). Well, that day is here with this lovely box set combining Seasons 1-3! In 9 months time when Game of Thrones returns for Season 5 expect me to layeth the proverbial smacketh down on Jon’s Game of Thrones loving candy ass with a knowledge bomb.

Andre the Giant: Life and LegendWithout meaning to, that last line has provided a perfect transition in to my next present, this one from my other half (in the podcasting sense), Jon. As some may know, both Jon and I are huge fans of wrestling, he’s a lapsed fan and I’m very much still in to it, which is why I was very happy to receive this little number through the post! This is “Andre The Giant – Life and Legend” by Box Brown, a graphical biography of the late Andre The Giant, one of the most popular personalities in and out of the squared circle. I’ve never been one to read the more traditional type of “cartoonist” comic strips with it’s limited dialogue, simple art style and focus on character and humour over the more bombastic nature of superhero comics. I have nothing against the genre, it’s just not been something to match my tastes. Having said that, I am looking forward to digging in to this book, the artwork looks to be steeped in personality and with only 2 pages read, the story has already tugged on my heart strings. Not only that, but dis guy appears, BROTHER.

Andre and Hulk

Watch Dogs BundleFinally, I’m a bit of a gamer and would probably talk about them more on the podcast if Jon kept up to date with the happenings… The irony being that Jon was a games journalist for what must have been close to a decade but now only dips his fingers every so often. I recently landed a new job and with it being my birthday as well I decided there was no better time to go “next-gen”. I picked up the Watch_Dogs PS4 bundle which also came with The Wolverine and Man of Steel on blu-ray for free, as well as cheapo copies of Killzone: Shadows Fall and FIFA 14. Onwards and upwards, let the games begin!

Birthday Blu-Rays and GamesTa ta for now!

Podcast – Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 10: The Children

An in-depth discussion on the Season 4 finale, with a few rambling discussions and out-there theories about ASoIaF in general thrown in for good measure.

Loads to talk about this week so probably best just to let you get on with it!

PS. Since recording Jon’s handed in his nerd-card after referring to Qyburn as Harwin. Any idiot knows that Harwin was a former member of the Stark household guard who joined the Brotherhood Without Banners, while one Maester Harwin only featured in the Xbox 360 game. What a loser.

PPS. A bird, yesterday.

Death of the Family

June 14, 2014

Podcast: Batman #13 – 17 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo and a whole bunch of other fine folk.

Death of the Family Jokerface

Because we only cover the most recent events in comics, we decided to return to the New 52 and take a look at Death of the Family.

What we have here is a fine example of how one carries a podcast when 50% of your presenting team seems to have nothing to say. To be fair, Jon does admit this pretty early on but his struggle to get through this is both obvious and pretty funny.

It shouldn’t be a struggle for you though dear listeners, because of Simon’s herculean efforts – he’s like the Shawn Michaels of podcasting, carrying a useless lump to something much greater than he deserves to be involved in.

A Song of Arse on Fire

June 10, 2014

Podcast – Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 9: The Watchers on the Wall.

We were led to believe this week’s battle would pitch a Wildling army of 100,000 against our tiny band of 102 plucky crows…and that’s not really what we got.

However what we did get was another awesome hour-long battle set-piece to match up to Season 2’s “Blackwater” – directed by that episode’s Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent). Join Simon and Jon for a brief discussion on this mostly excellent penultimate episode of Season 4.

Come on, let’s all say it together…”In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight!” waitaminute, no, “I stand between the candle and the star. We stand between the darkness and the light!” no…dammit…”I AM THE SWORD IN THE DARKNESS! I AM THE WATCHER ON THE WALLS! I AM THE SHIELD THAT GUARDS THE REALMS OF MEN!”

Podcast: Television Reviews – People Just Do Nothing and Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 8: The Mountain and the Viper

The Viper Vs The Mountain

The Red Viper by Zippo514

Way back in October 2011 for Episode 6 – Disco Badger, back when we were mere podcasting babes, we covered a series of internet videos called People Just Do Nothing, following the ups and downs of MC Sniper, DJ Beats and the rest of the Kurupt FM pirate radio crew in their struggle to wrest control of the airwaves from that total wanker DJ Funky, to provide the best in UK Garage and Drum & Bass to the Brentford area…and to stamp out the evil that is dubstep (and paedos…and spiders).

Almost three years on and now the BBC has got in on the act (a little behind the curve of trend-setters like us but they do get there eventually), following our favourite MC (now known as Grindah), Beats, Decoy, Steves and the rest of the crew, with four half-hour documentaries now available exclusively on BBC iPlayer. Basically, there probably isn’t a funnier British show around right now. And we knew about it first because WE ARE COOL, KNOW WHAT I MEAN? Innit.

People Just Do Nothing

People Just Do Nothing – Decoy, Grindah and Beats…doing reasonably little.

Following that we talk about this year’s most shocking Game of Thrones episode…to date at any rate…there’s still two left! The Red Viper of Dorne (or…Doom?) takes on The Mountain That Rides to avenge his sister, embarrass Tywin Lannister and save the life of everybody’s favourite dwarf! What could possibly go wrong?! Apart from Jon’s audio being a little undefined for this segment?! Apologies!
